Important Notice, September 21, 2022

Readers will have noticed that JMM: The Journal of Music and Meaning has lain fallow since 2018. JMM first appeared online in 2003. Video and audio files were increasingly becoming inaccessible due to the ongoing obsolescence of embedded players for audio and video content. These problems had become so widespread throughout JMM by 2018 that a major overhaul of the journal was necessary. At this time it also became evident that the long-term online existence of JMM needed to be ensured.

In order to resolve these issues, for some time now JMM has been undergoing a transition to the Open Journal System site (https://tidsskrift.dk) hosted by the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen. This moving process has proven to be extremely labor intensive, since hundreds and hundreds of files have had to be reformatted and moved manually given the need to adapt to https://tidsskrift.dk's content management system. In its new home at https://tidsskrift.dk, we will strive to recreate the look and feel of JMM as far as possible. At https://tidsskrift.dk multimedia material will be presented in such a fashion that it will not be compromised due to the vagaries of the internet as time go by. In addition, JMM will have a permanent stable home at https://tidsskrift.dk.

Within the coming months we will make the final transition to https://tidsskrift.dk and plan to relaunch JMM. Until that time we ask for continued patience on the part of our readers.

New Guidelines for Submission

Guidelines for Submission Posted on Dec 15, 2010 19:30:53

Articles, essays and research reports must be sent to submission@musicandmeaning.net

If you want to review a book for us, please contact us first at info@musicandmeaning.net before sending us anything.

As opposed to the original format of JMM, the new blog-based issues will only feature articles in pdf-format. From JMM10 and onwards, we are making the entire formatting of a paper the full responsibility of the author(s). Should your material be accepted for publication, it will be your responsibility to ensure that the finished, (possibly) revised article is camera-ready.

When you submit material for JMM, you must

1) Send two versions: One as a Microsoft Word document (or compatible format) facilitating easy proofreading, and one as a pdf-document, including all figures and illustrations, and, if possible, any audio or video examples you may utilize. Should you have problems integrating audio and video in your pdf-document, we will be able to help you with this, if you send us the relevant files separately.

If you are submitting a paper for peer-review, please anonymize both versions of your document, such that the identities of yourself and your co-authors (if any) are not stated anywhere.

2) Adhere to the general style of JMM‘s articles. See a sample paper here: pdf-version Microsoft Word version

3) Write in English of a publishable quality. For non-native speakers of English, we require that submitted articles (whether for peer-review or intended for our essay or research report sections) have been proofread by a native speaker of English with familiarity of academic discourse. Except for material written by U.K. residents, we only accept texts that follow APA formatting.

4) Include a short abstract (approx. 1500 characters) for use in the blog post regarding your article. You must also include a short biographical note on the author(s), not exceeding 1000 characters per author. The former requirement does not apply to book reviews.

Papers submitted for peer-review will be evaluated by two anonymous referees either from our Editorial Board or from other researchers in our network.

Editorial Profile

About JMM Posted on Dec 15, 2010 18:14:32

JMM: The Journal of Music and Meaning is an online, open access, peer-reviewed journal for multidisciplinary research on music and meaning. The editorial profile of JMM accommodates an inclusive plurality of methods and disciplines and welcomes contributions from a variety of fields, such as: philosophy, mathematics, physics, musicology, medicine, acoustics, neurology, theology, literary studies, philosophy of science, music pedagogy, computer science, semiotics, sociology, linguistics, religious studies, anthropology, psychology, biology, education studies, music therapy, culture studies, etc. JMM aims to bridge the gap between various studies in meaning and signification and areas of research in music. JMM especially encourages any multidisciplinary research on meaning that is able to challenge conceptions of music, or research that explores the notion of meaning by the study of musical phenomena.

Papers submitted for peer-review are refereed anonymously in a double-blind manner by members of our Editorial Board as well as other researchers recommended to us by our Associate Editors. The Editorial Board is composed of members whose areas of expertise reflects the journal’s multidisciplinary editorial profile.

Up until and including JMM8, JMM: The Journal of Music and Meaning was formally published semiannually. In the present, blog-based format of the journal, commenced with JMM9, issues are released one article at a time over a period corresponding to the former interval between two issues. From JMM13 and onwards, the journal has only one official volume per year, but the sizes of the volumes are at the same time expected – and intended – to be longer than previously.

JMM accepts – in addition to articles for peer-review – essays, reviews ands commentaries. Essays, reviews and commentaries are reviewed by the Editorial Staff and are published upon its approval. The JMM site furthermore provides an on-line forum for discussion of music and meaning. JMM welcomes anyone to contribute to ongoing discussions or to raise new issues in the JMM forum.

JMM: The Journal of Music and Meaning is published from the Institute of Philosophy, Education and the Study of Religions, University of Southern Denmark at Odense, Denmark.

JMM is graciously funded by the The Danish Council for Independent Research | Humanities (Det Frie Forskningsråd | Kultur og Kommunikation).
